Adverse weather

Many areas of the country are experiencing difficult travelling conditions as a result of the heavy snow. The Union's advice for members in affected areas (based on guidance issued by Nationwide) is as follows:

• There is a general expectation that you will make a reasonable effort to get into work. You should monitor local travel and police reports for advice and news about travelling conditions in your area. Please take note of safety advice issued by the police or other agencies.
• If you can't get into work safely you must contact your manager as soon as possible to agree actions for your individual circumstances.
• If conditions improve you should review the situation with your manager and attend work if possible.
  
• If you child's school is closed you should refer to the Domestic Leave Policy and discuss your circumstances with your manager. The Domestic Leave Policy provides time-off to make alternative caring arrangements.
  
• If, despite reasonable efforts, you are unable to attend work you should not lose any pay or holiday. However, your manager will want to be satisfied that reasonable efforts have been made but will also need to consider the general duty of care and should not ask you to take unreasonable risks. Your safety is important and you should not put yourself or others at risk where traveling conditions are hazardous.
